Second Asher Peres School PDF Print E-mail

Quantum sciences team at Macquarie is organizing the second Asher Peres International Physics School. The school introduces senior undergrads and junior postgrads to the current research at the interface of quantum theory and information, with each school [now it is the second, so we have a tradition!] focusing on some of its aspects. The lectures are given by Macquarie hosts and the leading international scientists. Keeping with Asher's dictum "Quantum phenomena do not occur in a Hilbert space; they occur in a laboratory", the lecturers and their subjects represent both theory and experiment.

This year the title is The edge: twixt quantum & classical phenomena. It covers a wealth of topics:

  • Quantum-classical transition and decoherence
  • Quantum mechanics, the art of quantum  nanoscopic mechanical systems: vibrating beams, membranes etc
  • Quantum dynamics and quantum noise in biological systems
  • Thermodynamics: from nano to macro
  • Manipulating of single molecules and single defects in diamonds
  • Introduction to quantum information and quantum open systems

The school is held over five days, November 30 - December 4, 2009, in the historic environs at Chowder Bay on Sydney Harbor, and yes, December =summer in Australia. To register, go to http://web.mac.com/quests/PeresSchool2009/Welcome.html

QUESTS PDF Print E-mail

In 2007 we concieved, setup and ran QUESTS: Quantum Engineering Science and Technology Stories. QUESTS brought together a number of undergraduate students from a variety of disciplines throughout the university. The students, after preparing with suitable readings and mentored by scientists who write for the public,  geared up to be "reporters" (QUESTERS). They then video-interviewed senior PhD students in quantum science labs sitting in leading research groups all over the world. The Questers then penned articlez about the PhD studentz and their research for the public. Following the editing of these articles by professional science writers these stories were published on line.

The QUESTS website is HERE.

The QUEST programme provided the students with a very different mode of learning and this innovation was recognised through the 2007 Macquarie Innovation Award for Teaching and Learning.

Unfortunately it became clear that to continue QUESTS for a second year would require securing additional resources and sadly the project was put on hold.

In Nov 2008 we organised and ran the inaugural Asher Peres International School in Physics. Entitled: From qubits to black holes, the school was held in honor of the late Asher Peres, one of the founding fathers of quantum information science. The school attracted students from all over the world, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, South Africa, Israel, the UK and Canada. The school, held at a beach side location on the beautiful Sydney harbor, was aimed at senior undergraduates and early postgraduates. We arranged a week long set of lectures during the day and fun activities each evening. The school's lecturers included many QSciTech members and several leading international scientists in quantum science: Prof Sir Peter Knight, Bei-Lok Hu, Christian Kurtsiefer, Jeremy O'Brien and Chris Fuchs. The students learned new ideas, got to meet other students with similar interests, have kept in touch afterwards and all without the pressure of exams, theses etc. i.e. just for their own edification and enjoyment.

See the school's website HERE.
